How to set up your first online store

You can launch a small online store in a weekend. The hard part is choosing tools you won't outgrow in six months.

The steps

  1. Pick what you'll sell: physical products, digital downloads or services.
  2. Choose a store platform. Hosted builders like Shopify handle hosting, checkout and security for you. Plans and promotions change often, so check current pricing on the provider's own site before you sign up.
  3. Set up payments, shipping and taxes before launch, not after the first order.
  4. Write clear product pages with photos, honest descriptions and return policies.
  5. Start an email list from day one. See our email platform guide.
  6. Plan how people will find you: search, social, marketplaces or ads.

Our take

For most first-time sellers a hosted builder is the faster, safer start. Choose WordPress if you already run a WordPress site or need full control.
